AdBlue and SCR come of age

SCR technology which relies on Adblue to cleanse harmful exhaust gas emissions is now the clear system of choice for trucks and buses, according to leading AdBlue supplier GreenChem.

Speaking on the eve of the important IAA Commercial Vehicle Exhibition in Hanover today, GreenChem Founder and Managing Director Teun de Bruijn said: “In the face of dramatically increasing fuel prices, consumption tests at Euro 5 which demonstrate SCR’s superiority over the rival EGR system and Cummins’ decision to opt for SCR in the US market because of fuel consumption and cost concerns, mean that SCR is firmly established and here to stay”.

He added: “Now even the car makers are incorporating SCR into their future engine strategies because of the need to achieve lower emissions limits but not increase fuel consumption in the process”.

Underlining the growth of AdBlue sales, Mr de Bruijn revealed that GreenChem (one of two leading suppliers of the urea-based fuel supplement ) will supply more than 200 million litres in Europe in 2008. It has a 25-strong network of European production points and is integrating its activities with Agrofert, a major urea supplier, for the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.

This attention to product quality and distribution has really paid off for GreenChem  (it controls more than 25% of AdBlue sales in eight major European markets), with a leading role in some of the largest.

However, Mr de Bruijn expressed concern about some of the procedures adopted both by some operators in handling AdBlue. “This really is not a difficult product to handle yet some producers are focused only on production, with the result that often the product is contaminated in the distribution channel”, says Mr de Bruijn.

“At the same time”, he added, “far too many vehicle operators do not understand what they need to do to keep their AdBlue in top condition”. He went on to give these tips:

• AdBlue is produced and delivered with great care to achieve the ISO 22241 quality
• Maintain quality by not breaking the quality chain
• Use only dedicated and sealed packaging
• Use only suppliers that control the total quality chain
• Use only equipment from those AdBlue suppliers
